Canterbury is awesome
I spent yesterday in Canterbury with Aku and her roommate and it was wonderful, not so much for my feet though XD We visited the cathedral. Although it's beautiful, we were a bit disappointed. The cathedral is one of England's oldest and it went through a lot of changes but the two predominant style are gothic and romanesque, both of which I appreciate, but I really didn't like how it looked like on the building's exterior. I'm not gonna go in details about architecture because I'm lazy the thought of translating the terms is enough to give me a headache; like, it's already a pain in the arse when I had to learn them back in grade 9, I'm not going through that anytime soon XD Basically, front to middle is gothic, rest is romanesque. So you've got a very over-the-top part, with lots of spires and sculptures glued to a more sober side. We didn't appreciate the unbalance and my brain was screaming 'wrong'.

Also, I'm still not over the fact that part of the crypt is on ground level with windows. I'm nitpicking but when part of the crypt is at ground level, it's not really a 'crypt'. Part of the stained-glass windows were plain, a whitish-grey, no illustrations on it. And it's pretty small. Ugh.

Now, that said, the interior was gorgeous and I absolutely loved learning more about the place and its history. The thing that might not have gone that well with us, or made us much more hard on the building, is that the entry is 10 pounds: the three of us grown up in areas where there's a cathedral. Much more beautiful (I'm still speaking about the exterior here), bigger, and most of all, free to access.

We also visited the Roman Museum as well as the Heritage Museum and generally walked a lot around. Canterbury's really gorgeous and I'll definitely post pics later. Got to have our afternoon tea in a medieval crooked house and that was pretty cool; the tea was wonderful and scones and cakes just so delicious.

On a random note, my roommate moved out today so I get the room all for myself for at least this night. Not that she kept me from being on the computer at night or using the kettle—my mac's light didn't disturb her and she slept with earpieces—and we got along nicely, but it's good to have some time for myself.

It's always jarring to see one structure with two different architectural styles. Drives me bonkers.

I don't mind... When it's nicely done. Well, not like I'd complain about it otherwise XD

Sounds like a great time! :D Even if Canterbury does sound a bit unbalanced! =P But still, beautiful stuff! ♥

Twas a great time. It's the cathedral that's unbalanced, the town itself is equally beautiful wherever you go (well, except for the part of the river that was only ditch water. I feel bad for the neighbours, poor guys must be attacked by mosquitos.
